BP Oil Leak and possible Tampa Bay effects

The recent events that have unfolded in the Gulf of Mexico regarding the British Petroleum (BP) Oil Leak at the Deepwater Horizon oil platform have caused some to be concerned over possible health risks for those who are directly working to assist in resolving the crisis. Although many experts believe the health risks associated with this event are minimal, a recent article at USAToday.com highlights some of the possible concerns:

A study done by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that residents exposed to oil from the 2007 sinking of the Hebei Spirit oil tanker off the Korean coast had increased risks of headache, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, tingling of limbs, sore throat, cough, runny nose, shortness of breath, itchy skin, rash and sore eyes.

Jeffrey Short, a scientist with the ocean conservation group Oceana, says in previous spills, especially Exxon Valdez, that was a danger during the shoreline cleanup phase.

BP has unfortunately been unable to contain this spill, and as the Gulf Oil Leak progresses, there become greater risks for health hazards as the oil moves toward shore. Although most of the effects are focused away from our coast, reports related to the spill are beginning to be made in the Tampa Bay area.
