Bicycle Cameras Help Catch Bicycle Accident Causes
Having a dashboard camera in your car could save you from a big headache if you are ever in a car accident in Clearwater, but have you thought about mounting a camera on your bicycle for the same reason? It makes a ton of sense, especially when you read articles like this one out of Miami from just last week where a hit and run driver left a bicyclist dead in the middle of the road.
Having a camera mounted on your bike will not only protect you if a crash occurs, it can help make our roads safer for everyone. Check out the video below where a bicyclist caught a public bus driver that nearly wiped out an entire group cycling over the Sand Key Bridge in Clearwater Beach.
Now thankfully no one was hurt in this video, but the driver of the bus should still be held accountable for his horrible decisions while driving, and thanks to the video there is now indisputable evidence that can be used to find the driver and make sure he is reeducated on the rights bicyclists have.
According to the newest statistics available on bicycling accidents:
“There were 726 bicycling deaths in in the US in 2012 and they accounted for 2 percent of all traffic fatalities during the year.”
That’s a big number when you think about how many car accidents occur on a yearly basis- and that’s just FATALITIES! In that same year there were a whopping 313,914 total bicyclists injured while riding. But don’t think we as Floridians are better than the national average either; actually it’s quite the opposite. Florida had the highest fatality rate of ANY state in the 2012 report with 5 percent of the traffic deaths being bicyclists.
Yes, riding a bike should be fun AND safe, but that’s just not the current reality of the sunshine state. Yes, motorists should take more care when approaching a bicyclists but that’s not in your control. What you can do though is proactively protect yourself with one or two cameras. Many cyclists are mounting cameras on the front and back of their bikes to insure that they have both coming and going views of drivers.
Having a camera with you may not stop an accident from happening, but it could protect you from thousands in unpaid medical bills by having invaluable evidence of who should be held responsible for causing your injuries. As the weather heats up and more people are out and about, be please be careful and remember: we all have to share the road.
