Boating Safety Tips for Memorial Day and the Rest of the Summer

Water sports activities are very popular here in Clearwater, St. Pete, and the Tampa Bay area, and on this Memorial Day and for the rest of the summer, many people plan to take to the water on boats.   • Life Jackets: You should always have enough lifejackets on board the boat for the amount of people on the water, and it is always good practice to wear a lifejacket at all times when out on the water.
  • Weather: Here on the West Coast of Florida, we are constantly reminded of how quickly the weather conditions can change. Always keep an eye out for developing thunderstorms and seek shelter immediately if storms do approach. You do not want to be caught unprepared and out on the open water if there is lightning in the vicinity.
  • Driving: Only persons with boat licenses should operate a water vehicle. Always try to have more than one person who is familiar with the boat on board, for if something should happen to your captain out on the water, you will want another experienced skipper out on the water with you.
  • Plan Your Trips: You should always let someone who is not going out on the water with you know of your intended trip. Inform them of your route, and the time that your outing should take. This can help locate you easier in case of an emergency.
  • Avoid Alcohol: As with any vehicle, it is never ok to operate a boat after drinking any amount of alcohol. The chances of being involved in a watercraft accident double with the presence of alcohol, and BUI (Boating Under the Influence) is a punishable crime.

Finally, Use Common Sense! Many boating mishaps could be avoided if common sense had prevailed. If in doubt about the safety of any activity on the water, err on the side of caution. Boating accidents are horrible tragedies, and we hope everyone enjoys a safe and fun Memorial Day and a great summer.
