5 things you should check on your car BEFORE it starts raining

car-in-rainwebWith our Clearwater summer storms beginning to roll in like clockwork most afternoons, it’s time to check your car before a little problem turns into a BIG one.

  1. Check your tires. The tread on them is what displaces water on a wet road and helps you stop!
    • Your grandparents probably taught you the Penny Test and it still works. Place a penny head first into your tires treads. Lincoln’s head should always be covered by part of the tread. If it isn’t it’s time to buy new tires!
  2. Check your wipers. Front AND Back (If you have one).
    • Wipers are what keep the road and traffic visible. It’s worth it to invest on a good set.
  3. Check all of your lights.
  4. Make sure you’re A/C and/or Defroster system is functioning correctly.
    • If will not matter how well your wipers are moving water if the inside of your windshield is fogged up!
  5. If you are having any engine troubles have a mechanic check them!
    • Even if your car is just idling rough, that can cause you to lose traction in the rain which may cause you to lose control of your car!

As Floridians we generally think we can handle a little rain but checking these 5 things can greatly increase your chances of driving safely in the rain. Remember though, your car is only as safe as the person driving it. When it starts raining, turn on your head lights and SLOW down.
