For at least 8 American people, taking a moment to check their texts while driving costs them their life – the shocking part is that number is a daily statistic. Over 1160 are injured doing the same function according to distraction.gov. Texting while driving is a huge risk motorists take and a distracted driving accident could cause harm to your own life, the lives of those in the car with you as well as those sharing the road at that moment.

3 things contribute to distraction while driving and those are:

  • Mental distraction

When your concentration is compromised, your mind wonders or you become sleepy.

  •  Physical distraction

When your hands are otherwise occupied in the vehicle.

  • Visual Distraction

When your eyes are no longer fixed on the road.

Any one of these distractions could potentially cause an accident. That’s where the real danger lies in texting and answering calls while driving (assuming there is no hands-free set in the car), using your cell phone while driving distracts the motorist on all three levels mentioned above. Actually, distracted driving is not just limited to using the phone, it also extends to any function you perform in your vehicle other than driving while the car is moving. Adjusting your seat, reaching for something, eating and drinking, talking even may prove to be a distraction for some.

At the end of the day, texting while driving is just not worth the accident it could result in and many of those who do not pass away in distracted driving accidents are left permanently injured with medical bills and accident associated debt that will last a lifetime.

It’s your phone, or your life – it’s that serious.
